The Boston Bruins have locked up centre Marc Savard with a seven-year contract extension through the 2016-17 season. According to a number of sources, the average salary cap hit will be about US$4.2-million per year. The Ottawa native has played 12 seasons in the NHL with the New York Rangers, Calgary Flames, Atlanta Thrashers and Bruins. The 32-year-old, who recently returned to action after suffering a broken foot, has scored four goals and six assists in 11 games this season.

The deal was believed to be worth more than $500-million.
