The Boston Bruins have locked up centre Marc Savard with a seven-year contract extension through the 2016-17 season. According to a number of sources, the average salary cap hit will be about US$4.2-million per year. The Ottawa native has played 12 seasons in the NHL with the New York Rangers, Calgary Flames, Atlanta Thrashers and Bruins. The 32-year-old, who recently returned to action after suffering a broken foot, has scored four goals and six assists in 11 games this season.
The Montreal Canadiens were officially sold to the Molson family yesterday when NHL owners approved the deal. In a unanimous vote, the league board of governors rubber-stamped an agreement reached last June between American George Gillett and brothers Geoff, Andrew and Justin Molson -- whose beer is among Canada's most popular. The deal was believed to be worth more than $500-million.
