Default Rules questions

Hi, I have been a fan of Hockey for about 15 years now. Over the years I have learned several of the rules of hockey and it seems as though I am always learning something new. I do however seem to be having some issues with the scoring this year...

It seems to me in the past if you won a game in regulation, you got 2 points. If you won or lost a game in OT, each team got 1 point. But this year seems to show things differently. I'm not sure if this is just my ignorance of the scoring system, or a recent rules change, but it seems to me that they are scoring things differently this year.

Can someone help me understand the scoring system in the NHL?

Thanks, Defender

yea they changed it....

not sure when they changed it but now if you win the game the winning team gets 2 points.

If the game goes to OT and one of the teams loses in OT (or in a shootout ) the losing team still gets a point because they kept the tie til the end of regulation play.

The winning team gets the 2 points though still.

I am not a fan of the changes the NHL has brought into the game. Call me old school, but..... I really wish they would go back to the points system of old. 2 points for a win 0 points or a loss. If you want the shootout, sure, keep it, but get rid of the single point for losing the game. You only get points for the win.

Thanks for the replies. I had to ask here because it is nearly impossible to search these NHL subjects on the web. When I tried too, nothing that I was looking for came up.

Thanks again, Defender

On the same note of scoring, I need some assistance on the scoreboard. For example when it says that the Red Wings are GP16 W11 L2 O3 some explanation is due.

I understand the Win/Loss thing, but I guess I am having difficulty with the other 2 stats. GP (games played I am guessing)??? If so, that would simply be the number of games played.

Overtime I am guessing would be the number of games lost in Overtime, since when you add the 2 points per win up and 1 point for each Overtime game, you get the correct number. I guess overtime isn't counted as a loss if you lose??

Is all my ramblings correct thinking?

Thanks, Defender

Hey Defender, your exactly right. The big change that cam into scoring was addidng the single point just for making it into the shootout. And in saying that, that is the one rule I would like changed back, well and the instigator rule. I really think that a win is a win and a loss is a loss, sure it looks ike there are more points, but it makes it so you can't really compare to years before because they never received a single point for losing in their games...

Excuse me for correcting you, but it is not a single point for a shootout, it is a single point in Overtime or the Overtime Shootout.

And thanks for your reply.

Peace, Defender

quick learner. (yes thats a compliment for you, Defender. You're catching on.)

yes the team that loses after regulation time gets one point whether they make it to the shootout or not. Because they finished the full regulation game with a tie.
