Default Carle to Flyers

The Philadelphia Flyers have picked up defenceman Matt Carle and the San Jose Sharks' third round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft from the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for Steve Eminger, Steve Downie and Tampa Bay's fourth round pick in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

TB has had so much movement these guuys are never going to learn to play together. They just acquired Carle in the summer. He's playing 22 minutes for them and while his offence has been missing he is still a plus player.

Hopefully Barrie and Ouells can find some stability for this team.

Default Is this trade paving way for Shanahan

Chuck Gormley reports the Philadelphia Flyers swapping Steve Eminger and Steve Downie to Tampa Bay for defenseman Matt Carle not only was done to potentially improve their blueline but could pave the way for signing UFA winger Brendan Shanahan. Dealing away two players for one leaves the Flyers one player short of the NHL limit of 50, but GM Paul Holmgren said he doesn't believe one move has anything to do with another. " "It moves us very close to the upper (salary) limit. We'll cross that (Shanahan) bridge when we get to it."

I thnk that this move pushes him closer to the cap ceiling meaning he'd have to dump more salary to get it done. (Pick up Shanahan). Carle's play thus far has been average at best, particularly in the defensive zone, but he's got plenty of potential and at 24 has plenty of time to develop into the quality puck-moving blueliner he is expected to become. If Carle can grow quickly, then TB might just regret this in the fututre.
